The Key To The Sale

Story is the key. Jesus taught in parables. Aesop taught in fables. Many pastors start off with a story. Politicians try to justify their policies by telling a story that usually starts with, “I met a person the other day who…”

“But I have some THING to say,” you cry. Great. Put it in a story, or write non-fiction. Jonathan Swift did both. His Gulliver’s Travels is famous, but in some circles he is better known for an essay called A Modest Proposal which lambasted the British government for its treatment of Ireland. But even it had a story line: how much better would the economies of both Britain and Ireland be if the Irish sold their excess children to England for meat? Jesus’ stories were gentler, but is the rich man reaching out from hell to Lazarus any less effective?

The first thing the agent wants to know is “What is your story about?” Focus there first.
